The 38th annual Chili Bowl was a successful trip for Cale Coons. Friday night's preliminary was the first time Coons had raced a full-sized midget, and it was a night to remember! Cale started 3rd in his heat race and jumped to the lead on lap one. Winning the heat was good enough to put him 4th overall in points out of the 80 entries. He started 6th in a qualifier and unfortunately could not go forward, finishing 7th. This loss in points caused Cale to go to the B Main. He started 3rd in the 15 lap B-Main, took the lead on lap 1 and never looked back.
In the preliminary feature, Cale started 17th and worked his way to a top 10 finishing 10th in his first ever midget A Main. This finish would give him a 3rd place start in Saturday's C-Main, right next to Cale's dad Jerry.
By the time the C-Mains began, the field of nearly 370 cars was narrowed down to 80 remaining competitors. Cale was able to finish 4th in the C-main, transferring to the B where he would start 19th. Unfortunately, that is where is run at the Chili Bowl would end.
In Cale's first-ever midget appearance, he was in the top 3 out of over 70 rookies and in the top 50 of all competitors. Cale is looking forward to carrying this momentum into the outdoor season.
